PRACTICAL NOTES

The fit is in
the particulars.

Use these notes to prepare measurements and questions. The actual garment and agreed terms determine what can be offered.

Compare the right dimensions.

Begin with measurements for the wearer and a similar garment that fits comfortably. Identify whether each width is measured flat or as a circumference, and use one unit throughout. Ask for the actual costume dimensions rather than relying only on its size label. Note the layers you plan to wear beneath it and the range of movement required. Sleeve, body and coat lengths can matter as much as chest or waist measurements.

Clarify fit before discussing changes.

If a measurement seems unsuitable, explain where the fit needs attention before asking about alterations. Do not assume a garment can be changed or that an alteration service is offered. For a hired item, obtain agreement before shortening a hem, moving a fastening or attaching another piece. A temporary adjustment can still affect fragile cloth or decorative details.

Check the pieces at handover.

Ask for an included-items list covering the garments and any collar, cap, sash or accessory. Compare it with what you receive and keep it for return. Photographs may show styling suggestions that are separate from an offer. Request close views and an account of the condition, noting existing marks or loose trims before use and agreeing how to report concerns.

Support the cloth and the trims.

Lift a costume by supporting the main body, not a ribbon, point or decorative button. Keep rough surfaces, jewellery and fastenings away from details that may catch. Ask how the actual garment should be hung, folded and packed. Follow its specific cleaning instructions, including those for the lining and trims. Do not assume that water, solvents, steam or heat are suitable without checking.

Agree the rental arrangements.

Confirm dates, deposit, collection or delivery, packing and the return deadline in writing before accepting a rental. Establish who arranges cleaning and how damage questions are handled. Keep the agreed terms and care note with the costume. An inquiry alone does not settle these arrangements or reserve the item.
